Question regarding wood router template kits.?
On this following dewalt product

Is the sole purpose of router guides like the one listed above so that you can move the router along the edge of something without the cutting part of the blade coming in contact?
For example, assume I want to route out a square into a piece of wood. Assume that
The actual square that I want to remove is 5 inches by 5 inches.
The actual distance from the edge of the guide to the cutting surface of the cutting bit is 3/8ths of an inch.
Therefore, if I cut a template out of metal and made a square 5&3/8ths x 5 & 3/8ths, I will end up with the proper 5in x 5in square when using the gude and template together?
How would you rank each of the following as templates
Softwood, Hardwood, Plexiglass, Heavy Guage Steel, Plywood, MDX, MDO
