Get the correct sized Sprenger bits for a healthier and happier horse!
Bits allow a horse rider to control the horse and are actually a communication link between the horse and the rider. It is fastened onto a horse’s bridle, placed in the horse’s mouth and has reins attached to it. There are differently designed bits and depending upon your style of riding and years of riding experience, you can choose a bit that is appropriate. The two most renowned brands that are famous for providing reliable and good quality bits are Sprenger bits and Mikmar bits. Most horse bits fall under three major categories which are;
- SNAFFLE – a gentle bit, broken in the middle. There are variations of this bit, including such as a three pieces or twisted wire snaffle.
- CURB BIT – uses a shank to provide more leverage for the rider. The longer is the shank, the harsher the bit. The size of the port will affect performance of the bit as well.
- KIM BERWICK – this is a good “medium” bit, with the pressure dependent on the port. Some are broken like a snaffle, others are whole pieces.
Getting the right sized bit is essential in making the bit comfortable for the horse that also prevents pinching the sensitive skin at the side of the horses’ mouth. In general most light horse breeds with soft mouths will use a five inch bit, which is the measurement across the bit. Some horses may have a bit narrower or wider mouth. Generally most horses that have not been ill-treated will have a “soft mouth” that has not been injured. But horses that have been misused by cruel and excessive use of a bit may require specialized combinations of bits to control the horse, and not injure it further.
Both Sprenger bits and Mikmar bits are remarkable and dependable horse bits that help in successful horse riding. The right bits are very important for achieving best levels of communication between the rider and the horse. Whenever a horse feels uncomfortable, it will give you signs that a wrong sized bit has been used. However, it is better not to wait for a horse to show signs, because the poor animal might hurt itself by that time. If you want a happier and healthier horse; don’t underestimate the importance of branded and correct fitting bits for horses. Moreover, bits should be cleaned regularly to prevent the build-up of debris on the bit. This is one horse tack that you should never compromise on.
