Bar Corbel
I need to know how to retrofit corbels under existing granite countertops.?
The builder installed cheap corbels on my 2cm granite overhang on my bar which is an 8 1/2 inch overhang. In the kitchen the bar has a 10 inch overhang of 3 cm granite with no corbel support. I need to know how to replace the corbels under the bar and add ones under the kitchen countertop. Most of the corbelsI have see require that they be installed prior to adding the counrtop as they are hung on screws and slid down to the locking area in keyways. How would you recommend I remove the one set in the bar, and replace that and add a set under the kitchen countertop? Thanks
It should be noted that both the corbles in place and the ones I need to add are located, or will be located on a sheetrocked half wall whick is attached to the rear of the cabinets. it is 4″ thick
Will they be load bearing? I have them on a kitchen island and they are purely for show. I installed then by drilling homes in the back of the cabinets and then screwing from inside the cabinet. If you do not want to deal with that, get some quick setting epoxy. Apply the epoxy and hold it in place until it sets. You can apply the apoxy to the areas touching the cabinet and the counter. If you have them for load bearing you will need to screw then into the cabinet and then I would suggest adding a support block on the inside of the cabinet that you screw into to add additional support.
To get the old ones off…. It depends how they were installed. They could have been glued or screwed.. Obviously the issue is removing them without damaging your cabinet. Look on the inside of the cabinet to see if you see the screws. If you do, try to locate the area on corbels where the screws are and try to drill them out using a carbide drill bit. If they are not screwed in, you can try to apply something to disolve the glue and then pry as gently as possible. or try to knock it gently back and forth with a hammer to determine how it is attached…
