How do I replaced the floor pans rusted Chevy Nova II 1962 A
I bought my 1962 Chevy II Nova in 1988 from a friend who served in the Guard National. The car was pretty good. There was really no problem and was able to take home, in fact, I have no job in the car for several years. I would like to go to work a few times a week and still leave the weekend. I was very happy with the car. Three years ago, I decided to paint. I know I could take a workshop body, but I wanted to do it myself. I wanted to be a project of my son and I work together. Reduce the size I started the car down and this is the beginning of my story.
I guess you've learned a lot during the process of restoring my return to New with its original beauty, so I thought I document the process and I will publish in line with many photos with the intention of helping this person with your project. So lets' begin!
I removed all what I can remove the body of the car. I get a power switch on the firewall so you can start the car and move, but when the actual painting process, I will begin to dismantle the engine and transmission. I started with the floorboards. There was a decrease in the amount of rust the front and just a little behind. The hump of the transmission shaft and tunnel were very good.
I wanted to buy the whole floor and replace by all, but was more expensive than I wanted and I was not sure if I could handle a big job. I was not sure if I had the opportunity to cut the plant entirely and replace it without any torsion or twisting of the car (it is a convertible). I decided to buy the floor to the left and right. This covered the front the whole way. After receiving the floorboards, I spent a lot of time to think and rethink and develop strategies on how best to meet the old cut and weld in new ones. From the floor was not rusty, I decided to cut only the oxidized and cut what I needed new floor pans replacement and weld in place. I am very happy with this decision. When cutting the pieces just rusty and new metal replacement, which was able to avoid any twisting or contortion the car and probably saved me a lot of time.
I was able to cut the rusted areas in a couple of hours. I tire cutter worked very well. Before you buy Scissors, I have tried other methods such as pneumatic saw, scissors and shears aviation. Believe me when I say that a pair of scissors tire cheap be a lifesaver. I use aviation cutter for cutting and setting small cuts.
Then I separated the front and back my new floor pans, cutting them in half. I cut the front of the plant about 2 inches taller than I needed. Then placed on the eastern front of a test adjustment. When I had the spare bread in place, I was in line with the existing floor with a rubber mallet. Then use a white spray paint and spray around the perimeter of the pot nine. By painting the edges, I could see how the new pan after removing it from the car. I repeated this procedure for the other side of the front and then the two zones rear. I took about a day to complete.
The next part needed soldering, please make sure you observe all safety practices when welding operation to prevent injury to life!
I was now ready to weld sheet metal replacement in place. This is where my brother was a great help! MIG welder features. We put new pots and also have been mentioned, my brother soldier all of them. After each container was nailed in place, we took a step back and examine their positions and made sure everything was exactly as I wanted. My brother completed the welding process until all four parts has been firmly welded in place. I do not know much about welding, but I think my brother had to spend more time and caution because the plate is thin. After the replacement parts were ground bread instead, proceeded to cover the seams with coated with Bondo and then I painted the entire floor with a primer antioxidant. My brother and I were able to finish the welding on Saturday morning and took the rest of the afternoon to finish the Bondo. It took several coats of paint on the floor in the coming days.
The images on my site, it may not be a perfectly smooth floor, without flaws, but I can assure you that this is a sound installation that will last many years, even if the garage, and will look even better once it is covered with sound damping material and new carpet. This worked for my 1962 Chevy Nova II, and I'm sure it works for you and your special projects.
