what’s your tent of choice?
I’ve just been down in Tasmania with a friend, and have used a new Kathmandu tent (a 2 man mistral dome) & found it to be more than adequate. Having alloy poles & a decent outer fly, makes a big difference in comfort & reliability.
What’s your tent of choice?
My “weapon of choice” for the past 8 years has been the Eureka! Aspen. The tent is a variant of the Apex line and was made for the former Galyan’s Sporting Goods Chain now owned by Dick’s. It has aluminum poles and a full fly with vestibule. It can be a bit too much for a solo backpacking trip, but I like the extra room and it holds up in 4-seasons. It has tie-out points so you can use it in winter or in high winds too. I don’t think I’d take it up Mt. Washington in January, but it held up through multiple summers guiding in the Rockies and plenty of winter treks in Vermont and the Adirondacks.
I own six tents and bivy-sacks. I almost always end up taking this tent for everything from car-camping to backpacking. If you can find on, or a similar type, it’s a good deal!
On another note: Why are people giving thumbs down to answers? This is an opinion question. If someone likes Coleman or canvas or making a shelter out of a tarp, who are you to criticize?
